Prepare Your Home for Winter

Winter is well on its way and you are probably thinking about Christmas and all the festivities. One thing you also need to think about, though it’s not quite as fun, is preparing your home for the colder months. If you don’t do this, you could face household problems like damp, condensation and mould.

Winter; what you need to know

During winter, homeowners are much more likely to switch on the heating, especially if temperatures drop below zero. Warming the property means that there will be more heat in the air and because it has nowhere to go, condensation can form. In other seasons this is much easier to control because you can open the windows and allow cold air to circulate. In winter, you won’t want to do this as it is very cold outside.

So, what should I do?

When condensation occurs, you will notice that water will stream down windows and other cold surfaces like doors and walls. Wiping away this excess moisture will help manage the problem but you will also need to reduce humidity. Investing in a dehumidifier, covering saucepans with lids and turning on extractor fans are just a few of the ways to do this.

If condensation turns into a more serious problem like damp or mould, you need to act immediately. Hiring a damp professional means that you will get professional, expert advice and prevent it from returning in the future. They may advise several treatments, ranging from eradication kits to paint additives.
