Is Damp Really That Harmful?

Think that damp is harmless? If you think that the answer is yes, you couldn’t be more wrong. As well as causing catastrophic damage to your home which could cost thousands of pounds to fix, it can also play havoc with your health. Skin irritation, allergic reactions and respiratory problems are just a few of the things that you could face if you choose to ignore damp.

So, what should you look out for?

The good news is that damp has several tell-tale signs which will help you to identify the problem almost immediately. If you notice a musty smell, wet patches, stained walls or wood rot, your home is probably suffering with damp.

When these problems escalate, it can cause the growth of mould on walls and other surfaces. Mould releases harmful spores into the air and can even be life threatening in some cases. This is why you should treat the problem before it puts your health at risk.

What is the treatment?

The right treatment will depend on the type of damp that is affecting your home, be it penetrating, rising or condensation. When you speak to your chosen damp expert, they will be able to tell you what treatment is needed before carrying out the work. Ventilation will probably be recommended as a preventive step for the future, as this will stop the build-up of moisture.
